Granite is the most commonly used commercial stone. It is very hard, dense and durable and very suitable for severe weather conditions. Usually granites are found in mountainous areas and are monolithic in design. The size of the grains may vary from fine to large. The color may vary among slabs but is usually homogenous. Available in every color imaginable, it has become one of the most popular stones on the market. Granite holds a polish better than marble and wears less than marble and limestone.
Because of its durability and longevity granite is great for heavily used surfaces. Leading consumer magazines have given granite the highest overall performance rating as a kitchen countertop material. We are often surprised at how many people think that granite harbors bacteria. Bacteria require several things in order to thrive and grow: oxygen, water, sunlight, nutrients, and a substrate to form on. The minerals in granite are toxic to bacteria. As a result, there is no habitable environment for bacteria to live and grow on a granite surface.
